One of the highlights of 2013’s memorable dates was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Marinesko, the legendary commander of submarine "S-13.". How many submariners’ names are famous in naval world history? They can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And so for just the mention of a name to cause vivid historical associations, is perhaps even rarer. Historians and veterans, researchers and professionals remember of course the American submarine commander Joseph F. Enright of the submarine "Archer-fish", who sank the largest Japanese aircraft carrier the "Shinano" which had a displacement of about 70,000 tons.

I am walking through Managua ... and I still cannot believe that the last time we met was 20 years ago. And all around me it is not the same Nicaragua, with which I once had many journalistic dates; it is a completely different country. The people look the same – honest and enterprising, dreamlike and friendly. But they are, if you look closely, also a little different.

The country is not divided, as before, into two hostile camps - the Sandinistas and the "Contras." The Republic has become, as it were, multipolitized. There is no sharp distinction between "us" and "them." The Civil War and the "contras" are in the past, and the Sandinistas that returned to power are not the same. They have also become multipolitized.

Such was the destiny of this correspondent’s duties that I was to travel to Morocco on a regular basis over the years, and oranges along with Tangier no longer induce in me such a severe emotional reaction.

Over the years the borders have opened, and now you can hit the road to Tangier any time, and Russian stores are full of oranges from Morocco.

But, closer inspection proved that Morocco is not only rich in citrus fruits. A recent trip there brought another Moroccan surprise – the farmers in Agadir province are ready and willing to provide Russia with fresh vegetables every winter.  These goods grow here all year, and yields are in the hundreds of thousands of tons.

I am very glad to be in Myanmar with a return visit. Our countries have developed traditionally friendly and trustful relations, and in February we will celebrate the 65thanniversary of diplomatic relations. I am satisfied to tell you that my colleague and I agreed to hold a special event on that occasion.

Russia sympathizes with the policy pursued by Myanmar’s leaders and reforms aimed at upgrading public life and economy and developing contacts with other world. We are confident that its consistent implementation will open up new opportunities to deepen our bilateral ties in various fields.

In Athens on January 7th, 2013, the 70th anniversary of the execution by the Nazis of British intelligence agent number 033V, Jerzy Ivanov-Šainović, was solemnly marked. This man's name is known to almost every Pole and Greek, but it is unknown in Russia.

He was an extraordinary man: multilingual (he spoke English, Polish, Russian, Greek, German, and French), an athlete (he played in the Polish water polo team and in 1934 he won the Greek championship in swimming in the 100 m freestyle), but above all, a talented spy.

The strange combination of name and surname is explained because the future spy was born in 1911 in Warsaw. Poland was then part of the Russian Empire, and Jerzy’s father was Colonel Vladimir Ivanov of the Russian army, and his mother was polish, Leonarda Šainović.

Vienna, 14 January 2013

Brunei Darussalam has ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), becoming the 158th country to do so. Tibor Tóth, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), welcomed the move: “This is not only a step towards a safer and more peaceful future in Asia. Brunei Darussalam signed the CTBT on 22 January 1997, shortly after it had been adopted. Of the ten countries comprising the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), all have signed and eight have also ratified: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. Myanmar and Thailand have yet to ratify.

Dear Leonid,

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am pleased with the results of today's meeting. It comes at a time when Ukrainian–Russian relations are on the rise and are marked by an intensive political dialogue at all levels, especially at the highest one, where the agreement in principle on future directions of bilateral cooperation is reached. Surely, as Leonid has said, economy is the basis for this interaction, partly because the results of cooperation in trade, economic and investment spheres are directly linked to the interests of particular enterprises and people working there.
