Colleagues, We are glad to welcome you at the regular meeting of the Business Council at the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation. Today, we have agreed to discuss a range of issues related to ensuring effective political and diplomatic support for our companies’ operations abroad and bolstering Russian businesses’ positions in foreign markets.
From 3 to 5 December 2018 Bratislava (Slovakia) will host international Forum «Media Agenda-2018: Freedom of Journalism in the Context of Human Rights, New Technologies and International Information Security». Freedom of journalism and human rights guarantees are issues that are acquiring particular relevance amid the rapidly developing information and communication technology.
With the negotiations on the terms of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU on the home run now, a legally-bound Brexit is slated for March 29, 2019. By this date, a pertinent agreement must have been ratified by both the British parliament and those of all 27 EU countries. Thus, it should be agreed at the November or, at most, the December EU summit (December 17-18).

The ruling government in Poland, formed following the victory of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), could bring up the issue of Poland’s withdrawal from the EU. A statement to this effect was made by President of the European Council Donald Tusk during his recent visit to his native Poland. Shortly afterwards the 250,000-strong march in Warsaw of supporters of the ruling party and nationalists opposed to Tusk further divided the society.

I would also like to express sincere gratitude to the leaders of Singapore for their decision to allocate a site for the construction of this complex in the very centre of your wonderful city.
On the 8th of November Sofia (Bulgaria) hosted the 7th international conference “Russia and Europe: Topical Issues of Contemporary International Journalism”. The aim of this annual international conference is to cover the issues of interaction between Russian and European media. The main topics of the discussion during the international event were: “European media as a source of Russian “sensations”” and “Up-to-date international information – national or nationalistic media”.
The tough economic sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran have aggravated conflict between Washington and its close allies. The European Union, the United Kingdom, France and Germany have expressed regret over measures taken by American President Donald Trump and signaled the need to protect their companies. Simultaneously, eight countries have received a six-month “sanctions delay” from the United States, which produced a further negative effect on the balance of strength and set the scene for a further escalation of tension.

Since August 2017, legislation allowing the imposition of a range of new sanctions against Russia has been passed by US lawmakers. Although not all this legislation has thus far been implemented by the president, Donald Trump, the mere threat of more draconian economic sanctions from the US created considerable uncertainty in Russia, especially after several high- profile Russian nationals were placed on the US Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list in April of this year. Several senior officials and lawmakers in the US have also indicated a willingness to impose penalties on other countries that do not observe US sanctions.
