The problem of migration poses one of the major challenges to the future of the European Union. Residents in more than half of EU countries call for establishing a strict control of migration, in some cases, even suggesting a complete ban on migrant movements. Meanwhile, any productive solution to this effect will inevitably affect freedom of movement of people within united Europe, which is regulated by the Schengen agreements. What are the prospects for the Schengen zone? And can it be preserved in its current format?

Russian traveler, artist and writer Fedor Konyukhov has completed an expedition in the course of which he sailed a row boat across the South Pacific from New Zealand to South America’s Cape Horn. He has thus covered the final part of the journey he began in 2014, when he sailed from Chile to Australia. Fedor Konyukhov’s expedition has set new world records, to be added to his already impressive list of world records.
Police of self proclaimed state of Kosovo launched raids in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Serbs-majority north of Kosovo, sparking an angry reaction from Serbs. More than twenty people have been arrested so far. Among those arrested is the chief of police of the village of Zubin Potok. A Kosovo police officer was wounded by a gunshot during the operation, but is not in danger of losing life. Two other officers were also injured, according to doctors in North Mitrovica.

Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has invited leaders of the League of Arab States (LAS) to an emergency summit in Mecca, scheduled for May 30, to discuss the security situation in the region. Although Arab League summits are normally held once a year in March, in the case of issues pertaining to the member-states’ national security, emergency summits can be convened if called for by one of the League’s members.
The High Court in Podgorica sentenced a group of 14 people on May 9 on terrorism charges and creating a criminal organization as part of an October 2016 attempt to overthrow the government and scupper the country’s NATO membership bid. The court found that the group of Serbs, Russians and Montenegrins had plotted to occupy the country’s parliament during 2016 parliament elections, assassinate then Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, and install a pro-Russian leadership, and make forcible change of power to prevent the country from joining NATO.

On May 15th  the “honorary patriarch” of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Filaret Denysenko held a press conference in his residence on Pushkinskaya Street  in Kiev. Fully aware of the public interest in his vision of the relationship between his Kiev “Patriarchate” (the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate) and the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Ukraine (the Orthodox Church of Ukraine), Patriarch Filaret spoke for almost an hour, revealing the details of his agreements with the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epiphanius Dumenko, former President Petr Poroshenko, and representatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

With voters from the 28 EU member states casting ballots on May 23-26 to elect their representatives for the European Parliament, political forces across the bloc have been pitching their programs to the public and trading mutual accusations. Voting begins on Thursday, starting with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and continues over four days. German Chancellor Angela Merkel hails the upcoming vote as "special," and of "great importance." However, even though the election campaign is in full swing now, its internal intensity and unpredictability are something mainly the participants and experts are really interested in.
