“He who does not wish to speak of capitalism should remain forever silent about Nazism” - Max Horkheimer famously said. It was a clear and often repeated line of this chief architect from the Frankfurt school of Philosophy – one of the most influential centres of thought in the XX century. This school of thought was tolerant and rather forgiving towards Western societies. Most importantly, the Frankfurters were for sure physically closest one to the post-WWII ideological and geopolitical default lines.

The precedence of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union naturally allows other European organizations and individual countries to contemplate the previously inconceivable exit option. While at the EU level there are no indications of any other member states planning to follow in London’s footsteps any time soon, in the Balkans, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which since the 1990s has been touted as a “window of international peacekeeping,” might by weighing a similar option.
The Munich Security Conference, which traditionally brings together heads of state and government, foreign and defense ministers in February, is usually expected to bring some kind of intrigue. This time round, the role was claimed by the conference report, titled “Westlessness,” whose main message was the loss by Western countries of their global leadership and, as a consequence, the growth of nationalist sentiment in Western countries and the loss of their monopoly on resolving international conflicts.
“Jauh di mata, dekat di hati [Out of sight, close to the heart].” This is how Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva, Russian ambassador to Indonesia, characterized the relationship between the two countries. In fact, in the 70 years of the relationship, it has gone through different states of proximity. It was pretty “hot” even before and around independence in 1945 when being leftist was identical with an anti-imperialist stance — and certainly during Sukarno’s presidency (1945 to 1967).

Member of the State Council, Foreign Minister Wang Yi in an exclusive interview with Reuters in Berlin, declared the right of all civilizations to development. Answering the question whether China and the USA will be able to avoid a clash of civilizations, Wang Yi said that such a concept as a clash of civilizations has lost its meaning in the modern context. According to the minister, human society has already entered the 21st century, having reached a high point of development, and therefore, talk about this theory is a return to the past.

Today February 18 in Rome the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu, meet their counterparts Luigi Di Maio and Lorenzo Guerini. A strategic 2 + 2 to tackle hot dossiers such as the Libyan one, but also to discuss bilateral relations between Italy and Russia. An opportunity not to be missed to relaunch relations between the two countries, but also between Moscow and Brussels. The Italian-Russian dialogue starts again in the 2 + 2 format: the Russian foreign and defense ministers, Lavrov and Shoigu, are expected today in Villa Madama for a series of meetings with their counterparts.
The newly published US Counter-Intelligence Strategy for 2020-2022 puts Russia and China at the top of the list of countries that pose a threat to the USA. “Russia and China are operating throughout the world, using all power instruments at their disposal against the United States, resorting to a wide variety of modern intelligence methods", - the document says.
On February 5, the US Senate found President Donald Trump not guilty of actions which could be classified as requiring his removal from office. All Republican Senators, who have a majority in the house, except Mitt Romney, turned down both charges against the president which accused him of "abuse of office" and " obstructing Congress work." That impeachment is not the option was obvious to any Washington insider from the very beginning. To remove Trump from office it was necessary to enlist the support of two thirds in the Senate, which is unrealistic at the moment.
