The Ukrainian authorities have entangled the country in a web of dictatorship. Everybody is already accustomed to the closure of newspapers that they find disagreeable, and the hunting down of dissenting journalists and politicians, but that is not enough for Poreshenko’s government.

Ukrainian schools have received an instruction to compulsorily transfer all school authority emails to the Ukrainian resource Ukr.net. If they disobey and use Russian counterparts (Mail.ru, Rambler.ru) they face a fine.

President Putin having toured four Latin American countries almost a month ago, the visits appear to stay on the top lines of the international agenda as, at the moment, Russia is sealing agricultural supply deals with Latin America to neutralize the West's “collective” sanctions and takes steps to generally boost the cooperation with the region. The Russian president's talks in Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentine, and Brazil reflect an initiative of unprecedented intensity that Moscow is launching to achieve deeper engagement with the region.

The record of Slovakia's Rusyns seems to occupy a modest niche within the general framework of the history of Rusyns of Transcarpathia or Hungary, which is explainable considering that for centuries both Transcarpathia (also known as Uhorská Rus) and Slovakia used to belong to Hungary and, therefore, the country held sway in the Rusyn affairs. There is no reason to overlook the dramatic, albeit local theme of the Rusyns of Slovakia whose existence over various epochs was rich in inspiring developments and bitter disappointments. All of the milestones of the past of Slovakia's Rusyns are impossible to mention is a brief paper, and what follows is essentially an attempt at an overview of the important part of the West-Russian history reflected in the story of Slovakia's Rusyns.

Being the emblem and the epicenter of Ukrainian nationalism seems to be Galicia's traditional posture in more or less every epoch. Seen as such by Ukrainian nationalists and their opponents alike, Galicia had to suffice with a peripheral role throughout the times of the Russian Empire or of the Soviet Union. The province moved into the spotlight every time Ukraine equipped itself with sovereign statehood, but receded to the background whenever Ukraine merged into neighboring geopolitical giants.

Amnesty International recently released a report on “stomach-turning” violence in Eastern Ukraine (“Abduction and Tortures in Eastern Ukraine,”  – see for example BBC coverage here). According to the report, the acts of violence are perpetrated chiefly by pro-Russian separatist groups.

The Amnesty International report and its conclusion about rebel responsibility for the majority of violence doesn`t hold water and has little in common with reality. The violence in Ukraine in general is not properly analyzed, and report is quite biased. Rather than the rebels, it is the Ukrainian army and the pro-EuroMaidan forces that are responsible for the abductions and abuses.

The problem of refugees from the Ukraine, which Kiev is trying to keep quiet, is makes itself more and more evident. Not only the Russian, but even the foreign media are reporting it. According to the UN, from the beginning and Euromaidan which had as its sequel, the so-called "Anti-terrorist” operations carried out by Ukrainian security forces in the territory of east Ukraine more than 10,000 people have already left (1).

Kiev earlier told horror stories about refugees from the Crimea, fleeing the Russian "aggression", but no refugees have appeared. Even though, following orders from the top, pickets took up positions in Ukrainian cities to protect future victims from Russian tyranny, The only tangible case relating to the mass flow of people from the Crimea to the mainland territory of Ukraine, was the arrival of several Crimean Tatar families to Lviv, from where they were later moved on to Poland.
