On January 29, 1942, an estimated 2,000 Italians resident in Kerch were ordered out of their homes and sent out to Kazakhstan in what essentially was an ethnic deportation authorized by Josef Stalin in retribution for the Italian military joining the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Kerch was occupied by Nazi Germany on November 16, 1941 and liberated by the Red Army on December 30.
The countries of the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia) have recently been the focus of attention of Italian diplomacy, with the need to find political partners in Africa to resolve the migrant crisis, the signing of a long-awaited peace deal between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2018, China’s rapidly expanding influence in neighboring Djibouti amid the French and US military presence there making the region a strategically important hub.

The disputes, which regularly flare up between the current governments of France and Italy are important for Russia, since the ideological rift between President Emmanuel Macron and the ruling Italian coalition of Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio has, among other things, have direct bearing on this country. However, there is more to these disagreements than just different views about the role played by Moscow, which Paris sees as purely negative, and Rome - as causing sympathy and even inspiring hope.
An international conference on Libya, mediated by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte that was recently held in Palermo, Sicily, was looking for ways to reconcile the rival centers of power and generally stabilize the situation in the long-troubled North African nation. One of these main power centers is the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, headed by Faiz Saraj, and the other is the Tobruk-based House of Representatives headed by its Speaker Aguila Saleh, who is supported by the Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The Mediterranean serves as a platform for Rome’s geopolitical efforts in the region which are aimed at creating a powerful configuration of strength that would leave the three main vectors of Italy’s foreign policy – the southern (directed at North Africa), the western (directed at the Atlantic) and the eastern (directed at the Balkans) – open and easy of access.
“Non/Fictio№”, officially called the International Book Fair for High-Quality Fiction and Non-Fiction, which marks its 20th anniversary, kicked off in Moscow’s Central House of Artists. Five-day book marathon is held from 28 November through 2 December 2018 under the patronage of the Federal Agency for Publishing and Mass Communications. Traditionally the fair spotlights one country as a special guest, and this year Italy is the Country of Honour for the first time in the fair’s history.
