President Putin having toured four Latin American countries almost a month ago, the visits appear to stay on the top lines of the international agenda as, at the moment, Russia is sealing agricultural supply deals with Latin America to neutralize the West's “collective” sanctions and takes steps to generally boost the cooperation with the region. The Russian president's talks in Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentine, and Brazil reflect an initiative of unprecedented intensity that Moscow is launching to achieve deeper engagement with the region.

One of the greatest writers of the 20th century, and a Nobel Laureate in Literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez has finally gone down in history. It happened on April 17th, at the age of 87 in Mexico City, where the writer had been living on a regular basis for most of the last few decades. During these last days, the entire world of readers, the whole literary world, and the entire journalistic world, have been in mourning. His homeland in Colombia has declared three days of mourning.

It is always sad to realize when one has to accept that a whole era of luminaries is disappearing before your very eyes, and therefore part of your life with it, but your life has been witness to an era of greats.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a first-class journalist and one of the founders of so- called "magic realism." He became a world notary during his lifetime. As always happens in such cases, the writer's fans are in no doubt that he will live forever, that he is immortal. To some extent, that is true. Marquez has immortalized himself through his literary works, his essays and journalism. It was only when, out of the blue, the news of the death of this "immortal” fell upon the world, that suddenly there was a mass "enlightenment". Yes, death spares no one, not geniuses nor those without talent. But one thing that everyone leaves behind them is their descendants. This is a historical measure of one’s personality.

The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa Delgado, an economist and a great friend of Russia came to Moscow on an official visit. Our honorable guest was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic and other officials. President Correa held talks with Vladimir Putin and held a meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, with other VIPs, as well as with Russian businessmen. A number of important international agreements were signed.

Rafael Correa has been in our country before. So the time came around again for a new meeting of the Ecuadorian leader with Russia. In recent years, the Republic of Ecuador has noticeably revived its partnership with Russia. Bilateral trade has grown significantly, reaching $1.3 billion last year. Under the leadership of Rafael Correa, the South American republic has made a breakthrough in cooperation with Russia in the energy sector. Ecuador has become Russia’s third largest trade and economic partner in the region, after Brazil and Argentina. The flowers and tropical fruits of this friendly country are familiar to almost every Russian. But it is noticeable to everyone, that this is not the most important sphere of our economic cooperation...

In a Moscow supermarket my attention was drawn to a new product on the shelves of cereals - quinoa (la quinoa). And then I remembered that the current year 2013 was declared by the United Nations to be the "International Year of Quinoa." This is a very ancient crop. The Incas cultivated it over three thousand years ago. Also, by the way, they called the fruit of the quinoa "divine seed", which gives people strength.

In the pre-Columbian era in the Andes, it was the second most important staple food after potatoes. When the quinoa plantations bloom, they are painted a golden color. That’s why, the grains from the crop are also called “golden grains”.

The Spanish capital, as well as all the rest of the Iberian country as a whole, is going through hard times. The recession there is still running the show, though, according to some, all the developed countries of Western Europe, including Spain, are gradually slowing the rate of economic decline or even starting to emerge from the crisis. Meanwhile the army of the unemployed in the Iberian kingdom still remains at a high level, accounting for nearly 4.7 million people. And the slogan "cut back, cut back some more!” continues to prevail in the Spanish government.

Researchers from one of Latin America's  biggest botanical gardens - the Soroa Orchid Botanical Garden sited in the province of Artemisa, not far from Havana – floated a new program aimed at helping children develop environment awareness. Overall, it is a strongly held belief in Cuba that teaching to appreciate and preserve nature should begin at the earliest age possible. The initiative announced by Cuban horticulture specialists coincided in time with the World Environment Day which, as suggested by the UN, is celebrated globally on June 5 with the goal of inspiring literally everyone to contribute to environment preservation.
