A coup in world politics – Trump is pushing back against the UN and intends to take powers away from the UN Security Council

US officials have floated the idea of broadening a Gaza “Board of Peace” headed by Donald Trump to include other hotspots such as Ukraine and Venezuela, according to people familiar with discussions. Western and Arab diplomats have expressed concerns about the notion of giving the nascent body an expanded mandate to mediate well beyond the Middle East, ‘Financial Times’ writes.

One person briefed on the idea said they believed the Trump administration viewed the Board of Peace “as a potential substitute for the UN... a kind of parallel unofficial body to deal with other conflicts beyond Gaza”.

A US official said planning for the Board of Peace was focused on the Israel-Gaza conflict and had not expanded beyond that as of that point. In a post the day before, Trump announced the board had been “formed” and that its membership — expected to consist of other world leaders — would be unveiled “shortly”.

“I can say with certainty that it is the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Many details of how the board will function remain unclear, including its precise make-up as well as the legal mandate with which it would act beyond the Middle East. It was formally authorised to oversee Gaza’s postwar transition by a UN Security Council resolution in November.

The idea of expanding the board’s remit was first reported by Haaretz. US officials this week said invitations to prospective members of the board had been sent out on Wednesday, but did not say to whom.

The state department declined to comment on the idea of expanding the board’s mandate.

Diplomats said US officials have floated Venezuela, which has been in turmoil since the capture of Nicolás Maduro this month, as a future area for mediation by the Board.

Regarding Ukraine, a senior Kyiv official involved in discussions with the US said a separate “Board of peace” — also chaired by Trump — was an important part of the proposals to end the war.

“Currently, it is suggested that this particular board will be established particularly for the Ukraine-Russia case,” the official said.

The Trump-Netanyahu rift: Jerusalem slams White House plan for Gaza

Prime Minister Netanyahu sharply criticized the White House announcement of the Gaza management committee, calling its composition uncoordinated and contrary to Israeli policy, and instructed the foreign minister to raise the matter urgently with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a strong statement on Saturday rejecting the White House declaration on the composition of the Gaza management committee, describing it as neither coordinated with Israel nor aligned with its policies. The announcement came after the US revealed details of the executive body that will oversee the new technocratic Palestinian administration in Gaza, reconstruction efforts, and demilitarization under President Trump's broader 20-point plan to end the war.

According to the American statement, the committee includes Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, a senior Qatari official Ali Al-Thawadi, Egypt's intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, American-Israeli-Cypriot billionaire businessman Yakir Gabay, former Bulgarian Foreign and Defense Minister Nikolay Mladenov, UAE's Reem Al-Hashemi, and UN representative Sigrid Kaag, among others.

The body, defined as an executive council, will operate under the higher-level Peace Council chaired by Trump himself, with members including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, World Bank President Ajay Banga, billionaire Marc Rowan, and Robert Gabriel, deputy national security advisor.

Israel's objection centers primarily on the inclusion of Turkey, which Jerusalem views as ideologically and politically linked to Hamas terrorists and consistently hostile toward Israeli policy in the region. Officials made clear to American counterparts that Ankara cannot be considered a legitimate actor in post-war Gaza governance. The presence of Qatar, long accused of supporting Hamas terrorists financially and politically, also raises deep concerns in Jerusalem about continued influence from states seen as problematic.

The statement from the Prime Minister's Office read, "The announcement regarding the composition of the Gaza management committee, subordinate to the Peace Council, was not coordinated with Israel and contradicts its policy." It added, "The Prime Minister has instructed the Foreign Minister to address this matter with the US Secretary of State."

The public rift highlights underlying strains in US-Israel coordination on the post-war vision for Gaza, even as both sides maintain close daily consultations.

…You see, the Westerners themselves admit that Trump's “Board of peace” is designed to replace the functions of the UN.

Those who would agree to participate in this attempt to replace the UN Security Council with a structure completely subordinate to Trump and American interests, should think twice.

The World will see who, specifically, is ready for the collapse of the United Nations.
