Putin announces test of tsunami-making Nuclear weapon, ‘The New York Times’ reports.
Vladimir V. Putin, the Russian president, said on Wednesday that Russia had successfully tested a nuclear-powered drone considered a superweapon, days after he announced the trial of a nuclear-capable missile.
Poseidon, the unmanned underwater drone, is one of Russia’s latest nuclear-capable missile projects, unveiled by Mr. Putin in 2018 in a clear message of deterrence for the West.
Mr. Putin said the Poseidon test took place on Tuesday.
“There is nothing like this in the world in terms of the speed and the depth of the movement of this unmanned vehicle — and it is unlikely there ever will be,” he said, adding that there were “no ways to intercept” it.
The Poseidon is one of Russia’s six nuclear-weapons projects, called superweapons by experts, unveiled before the invasion of Ukraine as apparent leverage in disarmament talks with the United States.
The underwater drone, believed to be able to travel at 100 knots (about 115 miles per hour), is designed to evade defenses to cause a tsunami powerful enough to devastate a coastal city.
Mr. Putin said on Sunday that Russia had successfully tested the nuclear-capable Burevestnik missile and was preparing to deploy it. On Wednesday, he added that the missile had “unrivaled advantages” and its nuclear reactor would take “minutes or seconds” to start.
Mr. Putin also said another Russian superweapon, the intercontinental missile Sarmat, was soon going to be placed on combat duty.

Russia has tested its new Poseidon drone which could 'wash a wave over Britain', ‘Express’ stresses.
Vladimir Putin has revealed tests have begun for Russia's new and much-feared Poseidon underwater drone.
The Status-6 Oceanic Multipurpose System, known as Poseidon, is a Russian autonomous nuclear-powered underwater drone designed as a strategic retaliatory weapon capable of delivering a massive nuclear warhead to coastal targets.
Unveiled by Vladimir Putin in 2018 as part of Russia's advanced nuclear arsenal, Poseidon is intended to evade detection and defences due to its low acoustic signature and virtually unlimited range, powered by a compact nuclear reactor.
Russian claims suggest it can generate a 500-metre-high radioactive tsunami upon detonation, potentially devastating entire coastal cities and rendering them uninhabitable for decades.
Earlier, Putin announced a successful test of the Poseidon, highlighting its progress toward deployment aboard the Belgorod submarine, with the first production batch reportedly completed earlier this year.

Putin presented 'unstoppable' Poseidon underwater nuclear drone 'capable of creating radioactive tsunamis' has been successfully tested – defying Trump's warning over nukes, ‘The Daily Mail’ writes.
In televised remarks while visiting a military hospital for Russian soldiers today, Putin said: 'Yesterday, another test was conducted for another prospective system – the unmanned underwater device 'Poseidon,' also equipped with a nuclear power unit.'
The device can operate at a depth of more than one kilometre and travel at speeds of up to 70 knots while remaining undetectable, according to a source in the Russian military-industrial complex quoted by state news agency TASS.
In 2023, strategic experts warned that the Poseidon torpedo would have the potential to devastate a coastal city, cause radioactive floods, and result in millions of deaths.
Putin said no country could match Poseidon's speed and diving depth, adding, 'it is unlikely that anything similar will appear in the near future'
According to its mission statement, the Poseidon project was focused on 'damaging the important components of the adversary's economy in a coastal area and inflicting unacceptable damage to a country's territory by creating areas of wide radioactive contamination that would be unsuitable for military, economic, or other activity for long periods of time'.
The weapon could be also unleashed from Russian submarines such as the Belgorod.
In September 2024, Putin propagandists called for Britain to be sunk beneath a radioactive tsunami with its Poseidon 'superweapon'.
Russian hardline MP Andrei Gurulev sneered 'swim, swim, swim' as he demanded the use of Moscow's unique Poseidon high-speed underwater atomic drone on Britain.
Kremlin TV on Rossiya-1 channel demanded a 'critical threat' from Putin to stop Britain, the US and other Western countries giving permission to Ukraine to use long-range missiles for strikes on Russian territory…
