European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will not seek a third term as head of the EU executive. This was announced by Björn Seibert, the Chief of Staff of the President of the European Commission. According to him, von der Leyen's planned restructuring of the agency is not part of a large-scale power grab.

Seibert made the comments Tuesday evening at a dinner with about 15 senior European Commission officials. writes Politico.

Giving details, the publication notes that one of the participants asked Seibert why von der Leyen was spending political capital for institutional reforms at such a late stage of her mandate if she does not expect to remain in power long enough to benefit from them?

Seibert has stated three times that von der Leyen will not run again, while noting that the restructuring is far from complete, says the publication.

As a reminder, European publications previously reported that something resembling a palace coup was being plotted within the European Commission, which could result in the removal of EU Foreign Service Chief Kaja Kallas from her post and powers. It was emphasized that Ursula von der Leyen was the driving force behind the changes.

It's worth noting that Ursula von der Leyen is serving her second term as President of the European Commission. She is remembered for her active support of the Kyiv regime and a number of anti-Russian initiatives, which subsequently resulted in further sanctions. Ursula von der Leyen's term expires in 2029.

Thus, it can be concluded that today the entire political elite of the European Union is a lame duck. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly on the verge of being dismissed. French President Macron will also be unable to run for another term. And German Chancellor Friedrich Merz may not even complete his first term, as he is the most unpopular politician in modern Germany.
