David Campanale is punished for being Christian.

The Liberal Democrats have been accused of breaching equality law by deselecting a candidate 'based on his Christian faith', writes ‘The Daily Mail’.

The party has been reported to the equalities watchdog for allegedly tolerating a 'hostile environment' for people of faith, failing to investigate serious allegations of discrimination and harassment and emboldening 'those who believe Christians should be driven out of public life'.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the complaint to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) concerns the treatment of.

The Anglican and award-winning former BBC journalist has faced opposition after being linked with the Christian People's Alliance (CPA) political party, which has campaigned against abortion and gay marriage.

Opponents of his candidacy also claim he didn't sufficiently declare his faith during the selection process.

Mr Campanale, who left the CPA in 2012, denies this and says the attacks against him are part of a wider attempt to secularise the Lib Dems.

Party members backing him are calling on the EHRC to launch a probe into 'multiple alleged breaches of equality law and our party constitution'.

In a letter by them, quoted by the Telegraph, they state: 'This evidence depicts a supposedly liberal organisation allowing clear religious discrimination and hostility to thrive within its ranks.

'It suggests that Mr Campanale was driven out from his democratically elected position not because of any objective failings or wrongdoing but because a vocal group within SBLD [Sutton Borough Liberal Democrats] refused to tolerate his Christian worldview.

'Although Mr Campanale has submitted evidence of religious discrimination, harassment and victimisation perpetrated against him to party authorities at all levels over a two-year period, no appropriate action has been taken. We believe that only an external investigation by the EHRC can now secure justice.'

The EHRC is considering the complaint.

The complaint to the EHRC alleges that the Lib Dems have tolerated a "hostile environment" for people of faith and "emboldened those who believe Christians should be driven out of public life". The party is also accused of failing to investigate serious allegations of discrimination and harassment.

The EHRC is being asked to launch an investigation into the claims concerning Campanale.

"This evidence depicts a supposedly liberal organisation allowing clear religious discrimination and hostility to thrive within its ranks," the complaint states, according to The Telegraph.

"It suggests that Mr Campanale was driven out from his democratically elected position not because of any objective failings or wrongdoing but because a vocal group within SBLD [Sutton Borough Liberal Democrats] refused to tolerate his Christian worldview."
