European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Beijing to scale down cooperation with Russia if it wants to develop relations with the European Union.
China is "de facto contributing to Russia's military economy," von der Leyen said. She warned that China's actions in the conflict will be a "determining factor" for future relations between the EU and China.
In response, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a media briefing that cooperation between China and Russia does not tolerate interference from third parties, TASS reports.
"Normal cooperation between China and Russia is not directed against any third parties and should not be subject to interference from third parties," she noted. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping signed a joint statement on further deepening relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between their two countries. During their talks, the two leaders also discussed current international and regional issues.
"Following their talks, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping signed a Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China on further deepening the relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction in the new era to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War, the Victory of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the creation of the United Nations. A package of bilateral intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents was also signed during the talks," the statement said.
