Rom. 2:10-16; Mt. 4:18-23

The Lord called St. Peter and St. Andrew, and they followed Him right away, having left everything behind. He called St. James and St. John, and they, likewise, left everything and followed the Lord immediately.

Why did they follow Him so quickly and willingly? Because they saw something superior. Such is the law of a human soul, that when we find and taste the superior, we turn away from the inferior and drop it altogether. Later the Lord spoke about the same thing in His parables of the treasure hidden in the field [Mt. 13:44] and a pearl of a great price [Mt. 13:46]. The treasure and the pearl mean our faith in the Lord and our communion with Him through faith.

We have received these treasures in the Sacrament of Baptism. Why, then, do we value them so little and give them away for nothing? Because in our formative years we never taste them, and they becomes useless for our heart. Our heart never learns the superior; it is bound to the earth, confined to inferior things, learning only to distinguish between them, which one is worse than another, — and upon that drastically limited scope our whole worldview is built. That’s why, while others heed to the call of the Lord, we. the chosen ones, run away from Him...
