President of the European commission von der Leyen and Secretary General Rutte met for the first time since he took office at the helm of NATO.
Their discussion focused on the importance of a close and strategic partnership between the Union and the Alliance as EU Commission release reports.
They also discussed the growing assertiveness of authoritarian states on the world's stage. These states challenge our common interests, values and democratic principles, using multiple means – political, economic, technological and military.
Rutte and von der Leyen met in Brussels for the first time since the new NATO chief took office on Oct. 1, discussing the importance of a close and strategic partnership between the EU and NATO.
“Both agreed that in an increasingly dangerous world, this partnership is vital in order to champion and safeguard peace, freedom and prosperity," read a joint statement following the talks.
Furthermore, the statement noted that both parties discussed what they described as the "growing assertiveness of authoritarian states on the worldآ’s stage" where these states challenge the common interests, values, and democratic principles of the EU and NATO, using multiple means" at the political, economic, technological, and military levels.
To address these evolving threats and challenges, President von der Leyen and Secretary General Rutte have agreed to set up a new high-level task force to strengthen the existing EU-NATO cooperation.
Planning for the first meeting of the task force is expected to move forward in the coming weeks.

Russia after repeated warnings and attempts to negotiate the non-expansion of NATO, was forced to launch a special operation, which the West eventually turns into a confrontation with outright attempt to weaken Russia with the help of Ukraine. Do Europeans want this?
