France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are working on their own format for potential negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Dmitry Bunevich, political scientist and advisor to the director of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, thus commented on this in an interview with International Affairs magazine. "This isn't the first attempt by the trilateral format of London, Paris, and Berlin to take part in this negotiation process, which is still fairly hypothetical," Bunevich said.
"In principal, the purpose of this is more or less clear. It reflects the EU’s and the United Kingdom's fear that the United States and Russia will somehow agree on how to end the Ukrainian crisis and reach consensus on a new security structure for Europe and Asia," Bunevich noted, adding that "the Europeans would hate to see this happening, but we know full well that their own line is extremely destructive, as they generally do not support any agreements that would suit Moscow," the expert added.
"They keep supporting the Kyiv regime, doubling down on thwarting all initiatives aimed at resolving this conflict. Their primary goal is to coordinate and consolidate efforts to make sure that this conflict continues," Dmitry Bunevich observed.
"The Europeans believe that by supporting the Zelensky regime, they are forcing Russia to drain its resources and energy in this fight, which, given their anti-Russian stance, only serves their interests. On the one hand, we see the Europeans' desire to be at the negotiating table, and on the other, a desire to slow down these negotiations," the expert concluded.
