Europe is no longer Washington's primary centre of gravity and the shift is structural, not temporary, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said as European leaders grapple with how to adjust to U.S. President Donald Trump's approach to the transatlantic relationship.
Speaking at the European Defence Agency's annual conference, she added that while the EU still seeks strong transatlantic ties and the United States will remain an ally, Europe must adapt to new realities, and "NATO needs to become more European to maintain its strength".
"The risk of a full-blown return to coercive power politics, spheres of influence and a world where might makes right, is very real", she also said.
…The split in the so-called collective West is obvious. Even the leaders of the European Union aren't denying it.
The world is changing. A global crisis is looming, and in these conditions, everyone is acting “for themselves.”
Trump has realized that Europe is an unnecessary burden and an unnecessary obligation for him. Trump is saving his United States, and his policies are entirely appropriate to the current trend of the collapse of the post-Yalta world and its structures. The fate of Europe is not of his concern.
The slogan of the day for the United States today is the well-known slogan of American soldiers: "Save our asses!"
