Rom. 4:4-12; Mt. 7:15-21
“Beware of false prophets" [Mt. 7:15]. This warning has always been timely, since the beginning of Christianity and through this very day.
The Lord did not say exactly which false prophets to beware of; indeed, how to define them? They change like fashions, and every age bears new ones. They always show up “in sheep’s clothing", seemingly benign, doing good and telling the truth. Today they are donned in progress, civilization, education, liberal thought, liberal politics, liberal opinions, and so forth. All this is deceptive disguise.
If you come across a display of such fashions, do not hasten to give your ear to the prophets who put them on. Watch out for a wolf under this sheep’s clothing. Make sure to keep in mind: the Lord is the only force of true progress, the only tamer of human hearts and customs, the only enlightener, the only guarantor of liberties, the only source of the sense of truth in the heart, a sense of truth more strong and convincing than anything else in the world. Thus, if you notice in the preaching of new prophets even a shadow of contradiction to the Word of God — have no doubt that they are wolves and flee from them.
