Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

On August 14, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

During the talks, the two sides discussed ways to advance bilateral relations. They emphasised the importance of expanding Russian-Thai cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology and humanitarian affairs, as well as strengthening the legal framework for bilateral ties.

The officials had a detailed exchange of views on international and regional issues, including the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, and on steps to coordinate efforts in multilateral venues, including BRICS.

Dear friend,

I am delighted to see you here in Moscow. We met recently in India and had a good discussion there, and it is a pleasure to welcome you now on a full-scale visit to Russia. As I understand it, you have already co-chaired the regular session of the Russian-Thai Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation with Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and Arctic, Alexey Chekunkov.

Thailand is our oldest partner in Southeast Asia. We are interested in the comprehensive development of our relations across a broad range of areas, from trade, economics, and investment to humanitarian ties, all of which also have a long and strong history.

We have traditionally worked closely on foreign policy issues, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, which has been a driving force behind global economic growth for many years and is home to crucial geopolitical processes that have a direct bearing on international security.

Today presents an excellent opportunity to discuss all of these matters in a candid and friendly manner. The Consultation Plan we have just signed for the next three years will, I am sure, add structure and dynamism to the relationship between our foreign ministries.

Early next year, we will mark the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries. Let us take the opportunity today to outline the main areas of preparation for this significant milestone, so that we can mark it in a fitting manner.
