On May 21, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with Vice President of the State of Palestine and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Hussein Al Sheikh during a phone call initiated by the Palestinian side.

The officials discussed the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, focusing on the need to ensure a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and the swift launch of operations to restore the virtually destroyed civilian infrastructure in the enclave. They also stressed the need to normalise the situation on the West Bank.

The Russian minister reaffirmed Moscow’s unwavering conviction that there is no alternative to a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, based on the well-established international legal framework that envisages the creation of an independent State of Palestine coexisting in peace and security with Israel.

Restoring Palestinian national unity on the PLO’s political platform, including in the context of decisions approved by the 8th General Conference of Fatah held from May 14 to 16, was discussed as a separate matter.

They also considered current issues related to strengthening the traditionally friendly Russian-Palestinian relations.
