The European Union and the United States are no longer coordinating their actions to combat circumvention of anti-Russian sanctions, the German newspaper ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’ wrote on May 27, citing a report by the German Foreign Ministry, ‘Izvestia’ quotes.
As noted in the document, negotiations between the EU and the United States on cooperation in the fight against circumvention of anti-Russian sanctions at the meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs on May 20 suffered a crushing failure.
During the meeting, European Union Special Envoy for sanctions David O'Sullivan complained that there was a "complete cessation of transatlantic coordination" of measures to combat methods that violate restrictions against Russia. In addition, cooperation within the Group of Seven (G7) countries has also "lost momentum."
The New York Times newspaper noted on May 26 that US President Donald Trump had shown his intention to distance himself from participating in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, in his conversation with the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Finland and the European Commission, the us President "has made clear that it does not intend to exert pressure, and especially to impose severe economic sanctions on Russia."
In turn, the AFP news agency reported on May 14 that the ambassadors of the European Union had agreed on the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. Alexey Chepa, Deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, commented that the new restrictive measures demonstrate the unwillingness of EU countries to end the conflict in Ukraine.
