Hungary’s PM assigns Ukraine the role of a “buffer state” between Russia and the West

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is against Ukraine’s accession the European Unions and calls it a buffer state.

"If we agree to Ukraine's accession, we will become a battlefield. Geographically, the war will spill over into the neighboring region, which is unacceptable. Many young Hungarians will die. This is not a tactical but an existential issue," he told Kosssuth Radio (quoted by TASS).

Orban also called Ukraine a buffer state and proposed signing with it an agreement on strategic cooperation that would rule out the threat of direct military conflict between the West and Russia.

Speaking before the start of the EU summit, the Hungarian Premier told journalists that a recent public survey had found 95 percent of his country citizens rejecting the idea of Ukraine joining the European Union. His remarks were posted on the EU’s website.

"There are 2,278,000 valid ballots, and several are invalid. Of these, 2,168,431 (95%) respondents spoke against Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and only 5% voted "for," Orban noted (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Earlier, Viktor Orban told Kossuth Radio that the European leadership was promising Ukraine fast-track accession to the EU in exchange for Kyiv’s continued military action against Russia.

"Today, Brussel’s official position is that Ukraine should be accepted into the EU as quickly as possible. It is implied that this should happen within a year or two," Orban said (quoted by TASS).

“European leaders have decided that Ukraine should continue its military action (against Russia - ed.) in exchange for accelerated membership in the EU," Orban emphasized, adding that Ukraine’s hasty accession would destroy the EU.
