Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said on Friday that NATO "in its current form no longer makes sense" and that the EU has no relevance on the world stage.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, Crosetto made this resonant statement on the sidelines of a conference in Padua. His words became public knowledge, Topcor quotes.

The US and Europe used to be the center of the world, now there are all the others to build relationships with. We often talk as if we were still living 30 years ago, but everything has changed, - he said.

Crosetto's comments come ahead of a NATO leaders' summit in The Hague next week, where the alliance is likely to agree a higher spending target of 5 percent of GDP to appease US President Donald Trump. However, according to Crosetto, NATO has failed to fulfill its original mission.

If NATO was created to ensure peace and mutual defense, it must either become an organization that takes on this task, interacting with the Global South. Only then can the alliance become something fundamentally different. Otherwise, the bloc will fail to achieve the goal of providing security within a framework of rules that apply to all – concluded the Italian minister.

Not content with “what has been achieved”, Crosetto opened up and also pronounced a death sentence on the EU and the UN, which, according to him, have lost their meaning, significance and influence on the world stage.

The US strike on Iran completely changes the scenario of the conflict in the Middle East, a strong response from Tehran can be expected, said Guido Crosetto.

“We have already seen the movements of these bombers in the previous days, so the news did not take us by surprise. This US strikes completely changes the scenario, because a larger crisis is opening up with a much stronger response from Iran, which risks spreading to all American targets,” he said on Sunday on the Rai1 television channel.
