Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the US authorities opposed the attempted coup in Gambia in 2014, while supporting a similar event in Ukraine, TASS reported.
“Speaking of the United States, in 2014, shortly after February, there was an attempted coup in Gambia. If you want to know more about it, just go online, there is a statement from the State Department regarding the coup attempt in Gambia, which says [that] the United States will never support an unconstitutional transfer of power. Ask your American colleagues here at the press conference why it is not allowed to happen in Gambia, but allowed in Ukraine?” Lavrov noted, following talks with his Armenian colleague Ararat Mirzoyan.
He also emphasized the fact that the United States backed the government in Gambia, but sought to overthrow the Ukrainian president.
Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, stated on her social networks that the Western authorities betrayed Ukraine when they meddled in the country's domestic affairs, "pitting" Ukrainians against Russians, and provoking a conflict in the country.
Zakharova then quoted the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani as saying that Europe should not play a secondary role in resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
“The Western leaders betrayed Ukraine when they prevented its democratic transition and strengthening of its independence, when they interfered in the country’s internal affairs, set Ukrainians against Russians, Slavs against Slavs, initiated an unconstitutional coup, lied about their alleged implementation of the Minsk accords, and then provoked a massacre in the region," Zakharova noted.
She also recalled the recent admission by the leaders of the EU countries, namely the German ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel and former French President Francois Hollande that they were not going to fulfill the Minsk agreements, even though they had previously insisted otherwise.
"The Minsk accords became part of the system of international law after they were approved by the UN Security Council. This means that they were subject to mandatory implementation. Both Hollande and Merkel, and, of course, the Italian leadership, were fully aware of this, just as they are today. By violating international law, which they now openly admit, the EU members became сomplicit in unleashing the catastrophe that has unfolded in Ukraine, and through their own actions they have brought about an armed conflict on the European continent. Had the provisions of the Minsk agreement been implemented, this would have saved Ukraine, and, at the same time, would have eased the current unenviable situation that the citizens of the European Union have found themselves in, seeing their wellbeing significantly declined due to the erroneous, and sometimes simply criminal, actions of their leaders," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized.
