“If thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God" [Prov. 2:3-5]. The root of a God-pleasing life is the fear of God. When the fear of God comes to you, then, as a creative power, it will renew everything and rebuild a beautiful order, a spiritual universe in your soul.
How to gain the fear of God? In fact, you already have it, albeit suppressed: now strive to revive it. To this end, listen to your reason and open up your heart to the truth. Thus far, reason had no chance to speak: it was enslaved and could not say a meaningful word. Let it speak now.
Your reason will tell you that God has absolute power, that He is holding you, though being able to drop you at any instant. It will also tell you that God is present everywhere and knows everything, that He resents any wrong He finds in you. It will also tell you that God is just, that His justice is ready to punish you right now, though it is held back for the time being by His mercy. Finally, it will tell you about your death, ready to seize you and hand you over to judgment and punishment. Take heed and wake up your heart to these truths. When you awaken your heart, the fear of God will come. This is the dawn of life.
