“Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard" [Pr. 21:13]. And how often we wonder why the Lord does not heed to our prayers! Here is why: has it never occured that we stopped our ears at the request for help from the needy? So, we are not heard ourselves.
But that is not yet a big loss if our prayer for something of a temporal value is not answered: the real trouble would be if the Lord does not listen to us when we pray to Him for the forgiveness of our sins. And He will not indeed — if the cry of the poor, of those whom we have rejected, is stronger than our prayers.
Let us hurry to avert this ultimate disaster, taking an example of Zacchaeus who, because of his wise generosity, had the Lord say about him: “This day salvation is come to this house ” [Lk. 19:9].
