Mass violation of the Spanish and EU border: Not just an Invasion — but Surrender

The footage from Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish enclaves in North Africa where thousands of illegal migrants have rushed past the Spanish borders, ought to be of grave concern to all patriotic or sovereignty-minded people in Europe and beyond, European Conservative stresses.

The scale and pace of this mass violation of the Spanish and, therefore, of the EU border are suggestive not of what the EU prefers to term ‘irregular migration’ or of ‘humanitarian need’ but of an invasion. Despite the pleas of local officials, the Spanish state has sat back whilst tens of thousands of Moroccan residents blatantly violate all norms and laws of national sovereignty in what appears to be a coordinated attempt to render these Spanish territories unviable as Spanish.

Even if law and order are restored on these territories, the legal architecture of European institutions will mean that there is little prospect of the illegal arrivals ever being returned.

This is both a national and a continental catastrophe — but it is one that has been invited by both Spanish and European progressive elites.

It has also called into question the key elements of the European Union. Not for the first time, countries are openly questioning the wisdom of free movement within the EU. The European institutions have overseen the creation of a vast legal and bureaucratic system which undermines sovereignty and border integrity at every turn. The tangled web of Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and national courts has made serious attempts to control the border effectively impossible and rendered equally unlikely any serious attempts to return those who have no right to be in Europe. Let us remember: the most significant EU action in relation to borders was not to defend them but to financially penalise the Hungarian government that attempted to protect its borders.

Thus, whatever qualities this influx may share with an invasion, it is far better understood as a surrender. This collapse of the integrity of Spanish territory is the logical consequence of a political elite who have surrendered any attachment to national sovereignty. Surrendering sovereignty is logically equivalent to the surrender of territory.

And despite some welcome measures in the European Parliament to attempt to provide some legal routes for the removal of illegal or criminal migrants, the EU as a whole looks set to further invite more of the scenes we have seen in Ceuta. The EU has been accelerating its plans for a “Pact for the Mediterranean,” which aims to bring many more of these “young people” to Europe for “cultural and educational exchange”. Time and again, European elites show greater affinity for the ‘young people’ of North Africa than their own populations, especially the young people of Europe who bear the brunt of the economic downturn and the EU’s repeated moves to drive down the cost of labour via the importation of foreigners.

Massie accuses GOP of hypocrisy over Ceuta crisis

Representative Thomas Massie accused fellow Republicans of hypocrisy on Saturday, arguing that congressional lawmakers expressing outrage over a massive migrant surge in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta recently supported language in a committee report that appeared sympathetic to Morocco's claims over the territory, Newsweek writes.

The criticism highlights an unexpected intersection between U.S. legislative processes and an international migration crisis. As Republican leaders in Washington, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, pointed to images of tens of thousands of migrants entering Ceuta as a warning about weak borders, Massie contended that his colleagues had previously backed language that appeared sympathetic to Morocco's position on Ceuta and neighboring Melilla.

What Massie said

In a post, Massie wrote on Saturday:

"Don't fall for the fake Fox/GOP outrage. Two weeks ago the House passed a bill that greenlighted the transfer of Spanish territory to Morocco. Every Republican except me voted for it, but now THEY are acting shocked at the invasion."

Massie referenced H.R. 8595, the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2027. The Kentucky Republican was the sole GOP lawmaker to vote against the legislation, which passed the House on July 15 in a 217-209 vote.

What the documents actually say

Massie's argument centers on language contained in a House Appropriations Committee report accompanying the legislation.

The report states: "The Committee notes that the Spanish-administered cities of Ceuta and Melilla are located in Moroccan territory and remain the subject of Morocco's longstanding claim."

It continues: "The Committee supports efforts by the Secretary of State to encourage diplomatic engagement between Morocco and Spain on the future status of Ceuta and Melilla."

The language appears in the report's section on Morocco rather than in the text of H.R. 8595 itself.

That distinction is central to evaluating Massie's claim that Congress "greenlighted the transfer" of Spanish territory to Morocco.

While the report does not endorse transferring sovereignty, it not only describes Ceuta and Melilla as being "located in Moroccan territory" but also expresses support for diplomatic engagement on their "future status," language critics could view as sympathetic to Morocco's position.

Why Ceuta matters

Ceuta, situated on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, is administered by Spain and forms one of the European Union's few land borders with Africa.

The region plunged into crisis after roughly 50,000 migrants crossed into the enclave on Thursday, prompting the deployment of Spanish military units. Juan Jesús Vivas, head of the Ceuta regional government, described the situation as "absolutely unsustainable."

Spanish authorities later reported that the flow had largely reversed, with more than 48,000 migrants returning to Morocco. Officials confirmed that at least 67 people died during the surge, with some drowning and others crushed while attempting to cross.
