Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s participation in BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

On May 14-15, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting chaired by India. The meeting took place in New Delhi.

The BRICS foreign ministers were hosted by Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi.

The participants engaged in an in-depth and candid exchange of views on a broad range of pressing international issues and spoke in support of the collective efforts aimed at strengthening multilateralism and the central coordinating role of the UN in ensuring peace, security, and sustainable development. The participants reaffirmed the group’s commitment to international law and the principles of the UN Charter understood as an indivisible and interdependent whole.

During sessions involving delegations from BRICS partner countries, the participants expressed shared commitment to improving the multilateral system, including the UN, the World Trade Organisation, and the Bretton Woods institutions, in order to increase the World Majority’s role when it comes to addressing urgent global challenges, and highlighted the negative impact of unilateral measures, including illegal sanctions, on the global economy and the Global South countries’ development.

They placed special emphasis on crises around the world, including the Middle East. A common position was reaffirmed in favour of resolving conflicts exclusively through political and diplomatic means.

A broad range of multilateral cooperation issues within BRICS, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year, was reviewed in depth. The ministers outlined promising areas of cooperation in the context of preparations for the upcoming 18th Summit in New Delhi in September 2026. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating the BRICS strategic partnership across all key areas, including politics and security, the economy and finance, and humanitarian ties.

Minister Lavrov emphasised the value of joint efforts to develop collective answers to contemporary challenges, especially amid the mounting differences within the international system, in which BRICS is rightfully assigned the role of a core element of the emerging multipolar world order. He also noted the importance of reinforcing coordination among member states and partner countries at international platforms.

The final document was released following the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
