Qatari Energy Minister and QatarEnergy CEO Saad bin Sharid al-Kaabi has written to the Belgian government, saying Qatar has faced an obstacle that is forcing it to stop supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to European consumers.
This was reported by the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Topwar quotes.
A senior Arab official noted that the main problem is the climate standards that are now in force in the European Union. Failure to comply with them threatens serious fines and civil liability. Qatar does not want to suffer losses because of this, which could force it to stop supplying LNG and other products to Europe.
Such a turn of events is possible if the European Commission refuses to soften the requirements for energy suppliers.
“Qatar and QatarEnergy will have to seriously consider alternative markets that provide a more stable and business-friendly environment,” – the head of the Qatar Ministry of Energy threatens Europeans.
Al-Kaabi noted that the Paris Agreement implies that each signatory country has the right to set its own goals in the fight against climate change.
The four-page letter was sent at the end of May and was received by several European governments, according to German media.
Qatar has the third largest natural gas reserves in the world and the sixth largest in terms of its production. In terms of LNG supplies to the EU, it ranks third, behind only the US and Russia. And if you consider that the Americans have recently reduced gas exports to Europe, the situation with gas supplies is not the best for Europeans.
…Well, Europe is refusing Russian gas. Qatar is stopping gas supplies to Europe. The US is cutting its gas supplies to Europe.
As the gamblers say – “fail”.
