Republicans are souring on the war in Ukraine

"I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won’t do it," recently said the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) (photo).

And there have been signs of waning enthusiasm for the Ukrainian cause among Republicans all year.

Percentage of Republicans who say “We're doing too much to support Ukraine”:

March 2022: 6%
September 2022: 32%
Today: 48%

The problem is only going to become more acute by January 2023.

Republicans are fooling themselves if they think they can transform a mandate to fight inflation into one for extending a war that has inflationary effects on the global economy.
