Russian Foreign Ministry statement regarding arrest warrant for historic Cuban leader Raul Castro:

We categorically reject and resolutely condemn the signing by a judge in Miami, US, of the arrest warrant for the historic leader of Cuba, Army General Raul Castro.

The political and legal assessment of the February 1996 incident, which the Americans personally attribute to Raul Castro, was provided in UN Security Council Resolution 1067 (1996) of July 26, 1996. The document does not include calls for anyone to be held accountable. This de facto means that the Security Council, including the United States, was in agreement that this part of the incident was considered resolved.

Bringing groundless and far-fetched charges more than 30 years later looks like nothing other than an act of revenge on the part of Miami’s anti-Cuban lobby, and a desire to settle scores with Raul Castro, who has recently turned 95.

We would like to emphasise that further efforts to aggravate tensions around the Island of Freedom, which is living through a difficult time due to the unprecedented trade, economic, financial and energy blockade, risk destabilising the wider Latin American and Caribbean region. Social upheavals in Cuba can trigger mass migration of Cubans to neighbouring countries, provoking a social crisis there.

This court decision could be interpreted as the expression of sentiments by a certain group of individuals, if not for what happened at the beginning of this year in Venezuela, where the national leader was abducted in violation of the norms and principles of international law.

For our part, we reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the Government of fraternal Cuba, with which we will continue to strengthen our close ties of friendship, mutual support, assistance and comprehensive cooperation.

We are confident that the indomitable Cuban people and their leaders will appropriately respond to the latest attack by their foreign ill-wishers.

We wish Comrade Raul Castro, a friend of Russia, good health and his inherent courage, bravery and strength of spirit.
