Russian Foreign Ministry statement in connection with the escalating situation around Cuba:

The Foreign Ministry expresses serious concern with the continuing escalation of tensions surrounding Cuba and the growing pressure it has been facing.

There has been a deliberate effort to ratchet up the atmosphere of confrontation. Against this backdrop, Russia reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Cuban Government and its brotherly people. We firmly condemn attempts to grossly interfere in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state, intimidate it and engage illegal unilateral restrictive measures.

The Island of Freedom has been facing unprecedented challenges these days stemming directly from the many years during which the United States enforced an embargo against Cuba in trade, the economy, finance and, more recently, in the energy sector.

We are convinced that having asserted its commitment to the ideals of freedom, independence, social justice, as well as considering its unrivalled resilience and courage in the face of external threats, the heroic Cuban nation will succeed in standing up for its integral right to define its sovereign development path on its own.

As for Russia, it is providing and will offer Cuba the necessary support, including financial aid.
