The BBC are set to close three channels and slash 100 jobs from BBC News as part of a huge cost-cutting process. Staff have been told that BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra will all close in early 2027, whilst BBC News will reduce their team by 100 roles.
This is part of a plan to cut costs at the corporation, and the total value saved from the job reductions alone is expected to be around £5.5million. The company have said they need to make savings of £500million by 2028.
In a note to staff about the changes, BBC Director-General Matt Brittin said: “We need to make every pound work harder for audiences as we respond to the immediate cost pressures and reinvent the BBC for a changing world. We all know that means tough choices.”
This is the second time BBC Three has been cut as a TV channel. In 2016, the channel, which was aimed at young audiences and launch shows such as Fleabag and Gavin & Stacey, was moved online. But it was reinstated as a TV channel in 2022.
It was announced separately that BBC News would be cutting 100 jobs. Rachel Jupp, the BBC’s new director of news, announced the savings plan via an internal email, saying: “I know this will be very difficult news for those affected.”
Jupp also warned that more was to come, as while the proposals were "necessary", they were "not sufficient to meet our funding reduction". BBC News were expected contribute £51million of savings to the company's overall goal. With the reduction in staff, they are thought to have saved £30.5million so far, meaning a further £20million needs to be saved.
The BBC is aiming to cut between 1800 and 2000 jobs overall. It is estimated that this will result in one in 10 jobs going and comes amid "financial pressure". Roughly 550 job closures have already been announced in news and more than 30 were cut from BBC Sport.
