The effect of a possible attack on Busher NPP “comparable to Chernobyl catastrophe” - Rosatom chief

The head of Russia’s atomic energy corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev said that no radiation leaks had been registered following Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. He added that consequences of an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant could be comparable to the Chernobyl disaster.

"The Bushehr plant is especially noteworthy.  Of course, if a strike is launched against the operational first power unit, it will be a Chernobyl-scale catastrophe," TASS quoted Likhachev as saying at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

According to Likhachev, some of the 200-plus Russian specialists working at the Bushehr plant have already been evacuated. Earlier, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Israeli authorities promised to ensure the safety of Russian citizens at the nuclear power plant.

Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg forum, Likhachev also said that most of Iran's operational nuclear facilities were undamaged following the Israeli attacks. He added, however, that their safety might be compromised by power outages and improper actions by personnel.

Likhachev said that Rosatom was standing by to organize an urgent evacuation of the Russian nationals working at the Busher NPP, adding that some Russian personnel had already been moved out.

On June 13, Israel launched Operation "Nation as a Lion," aimed at destroying Iranian nuclear facilities. The following day, the IAEA reported radiological and chemical contamination following a strike on a nuclear facility in Natanz.  Iranian authorities also confirmed a radiation leak.

In the current circumstances, many experts have legitimate questions that the destruction of Iranian facilities related to nuclear technology could lead to a catastrophe of further pollution in the region and neighboring countries.
