“Fear the Lord and depart from evil” [Prov. 3:7]. Set this as a goal for your preparation to the Holy Communion later this week, to make the fear of God dwell in you. to have a firm resolve to depart from any evil, no matter what the price for that might be, even as high as your life.

To achieve that, do not limit yourself to the externals, but look carefully inside yourself: examine your whole mindset, whether or not it is in full accord with the Word of God, with the Word of Truth; examine your intentions and inclinations, whether or not they conform to Lord’s demands, as they are presented in the Gospel; examine your entire life, whether or not it is in complete agreement with God’s commandments.

Lament and hate anything you find contrary to God’s will in your self­examination; resolve to purge yourself from all that forever. Doing so, you will be the most wise; doing otherwise, of course, calls for an opposite name.
