Thousands march against Renee Good's killing in Minneapolis as hundreds of protests planned across US, Sky News reports.

The demonstration in Minneapolis was one of hundreds of protests planned in towns and cities across the US over the weekend, demanding an end to large-scale deployments of ICE agents.

Thousands of people have marched in Minneapolis to protest against the killing of US mother-of-three Renee Good.

The 37-year-old driver was shot dead in her car in the Minnesotan city on Wednesday by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.

The Trump administration said the shooting was an act of self-defence by the agent, suggesting Ms Good used her vehicle as a weapon to attack him.

But state and local officials, as well as protesters, have rejected that characterisation, with her supporters saying they believe she steered away from the officer.

On Friday, mobile phone footage showed the moments around her death, filmed by the agent who shot her, named in US media as Jonathan Ross.

The video, which was reshared by the US vice president JD Vance on X, shows another ICE agent saying to Ms Good: "Get out of the f***ing car."

Ross is at the front driver side of the SUV. Ms Good reverses briefly, then turns the steering wheel towards the passenger side as she drives ahead and Ross opens fire. It is unclear if the car hits the officer or narrowly misses him.

The demonstration was one of hundreds of protests planned in towns and cities across the US over the weekend, demanding an end to large-scale deployments of ICE agents.

Federal-state tensions escalated further on Thursday when a US Border Patrol agent in Portland, Oregon, shot and wounded a man and woman in their car after an attempted vehicle stop.

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey has urged demonstrators to remain peaceful, saying any unlawful action would play into Donald Trump's hands.

On Friday night, about 1,000 people protested outside a hotel in the city that was believed to house ICE agents.

The demonstration turned violent as protesters threw ice, snow and rocks at officers, said police chief Brian O'Hara.

He added a police officer was injured when a chunk of ice was hurled at them, and 29 people were arrested during the unrest.

Minnesota governor Tim Walz echoed the call for peaceful demonstrations.

"Trump sent thousands of armed federal officers into our state, and it took just one day for them to kill someone," Mr Walz posted on social media.

"Now he wants nothing more than to see chaos distract from that horrific action. Don't give him what he wants."

There were also protests in New York. In Manhattan, several hundred people carried anti-ICE signs as they walked past an immigration court where agents have arrested migrants following their hearings.

They said: "We demand justice for Renee, ICE out of our communities, and action from our elected leaders. Enough is enough."

The fatal shooting of Renée Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday has prompted new scrutiny of the tactics and training for the thousands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers deployed across the country as part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation effort, writes ‘The Washington Post’.

Administration officials have defended the ICE officer who shot Good as she pulled away in her SUV, saying multiple videos of the incident show that he acted in self-defense. But several former law enforcement officials who reviewed the footage and spoke to ‘The Washington Post’ faulted the officer’s actions.

“It was really an unnecessary shooting”

They said the officer — identified through court records as Jonathan Ross, an employee of the agency’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division — placed himself at needless risk, escalated the situation and went against best law enforcement practices during the incident. Law enforcement officers should not position themselves in front of vehicles, and they need to try to de-escalate confrontations and must generally avoid shooting into moving vehicles, these officials said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem said the ICE officer “followed his training” and accused Good of trying to run him over. The SUV did move toward Ross as he stood in front of it, according to a Post analysis of video footage. But he moved out of the way and fired at least two of three shots from the side of the vehicle as it veered past him, the analysis found. Available videos of the incident reviewed by The Post do not show clearly if Good’s SUV made contact with Ross.

“It was really an unnecessary shooting,” said Dennis Kenney, a former Florida police officer and a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. “If you’ve got time to shoot, you’ve got time to get out of the way, which we saw in this case. The guy was clearly able to avoid being impacted by the car.”

Since the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown began last year, federal authorities have sent thousands of federal immigration officers into cities and states across the country. In some areas, including Minneapolis, local officials and residents have vocally opposed the administration’s push, and citizen groups have formed to monitor ICE activity and alert immigrants when federal officers are nearby.

Immigration officers and Border Patrol agents have in some cases used aggressive tactics to take people into custody or repel protesters, including smashing car windows or reaching into vehicles.

The Department of Homeland Security has said officers are facing a surge in threats and assaults, including with vehicles used as weapons, and blamed “sanctuary politicians and the media.” Officials have vowed to prosecute “rioters” and warned that demonstrations will not stop their immigration enforcement efforts.

Federal immigration officers have been involved in more than a dozen shootings during Trump’s second term, according to media reports and court records. Agents in Portland, Oregon, shot two undocumented immigrants during an immigration enforcement traffic stop Thursday, prompting an investigation by state officials.
