US Embassy in Moscow: “On this day, we honor those whose sacrifices brought Victory”

“On this day, we honor those whose sacrifices brought Victory. Victory was shared. And so was the memory of it.”

The Telegram channel of the US Embassy in Moscow published an appeal to Russian citizens dedicated to the Victory in World War II.

“80-я годовщина Победы на Европейском театре военных действий Второй мировой войны — это не только время триумфального празднования, но и момент тишины и благоговейной памяти.

Мы помним жертвы русского народа: Блокаду Ленинграда — почти 900 дней изнуряющего голода и ожесточённого сопротивления. Мы помним Сталинград и Севастополь. Мы помним бабушек, копавших окопы, и детей, носивших воду и донесения.

Мы помним вклад американских, советских и других союзных войск в достижение общей цели. Солдат Красной армии, сражавшихся за каждый километр, за каждую деревню, отвоёвывая свою землю у захватчиков. Молодых американских солдат, штурмовавших пляжи Нормандии в День «Д», прорвавшихся через Арденны в “Битве за Выступ”. Историческую встречу войск США и СССР на реке Эльба. Город за городом, окоп за окопом, ценой бесчисленных жертв, союзники вместе переломили ход войны с нацистской тиранией.

В этот день мы чтим тех, чьи жертвы принесли Победу. Победа была общей. И память о ней — тоже.”

“The 80th anniversary of Victory in the European Theater of World War II is not only a time of triumphant celebration, but also a moment of silence and reverent remembrance.

We remember the sacrifices of the Russian people: the Siege of Leningrad – almost 900 days of debilitating hunger and fierce resistance. We remember Stalingrad and Sevastopol. We remember the grandmothers who dug trenches and the children who carried water and reports.

We remember the contributions of American, Soviet and other allied forces to achieve a common goal. The Red Army soldiers who fought for every mile, for every village, to retake their land from the invaders. The young American soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, who broke through the Ardennes in the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. The historic meeting of US and Soviet troops on the Elbe River. City by city, trench by trench, at the cost of countless victims, the Allies together turned the tide of the war against Nazi tyranny.
