So, why does Kiev seek a longer war in Europe? A response to this question is being asked by many people – from academic community and from grass-root people.
First of all, we must always remember that the Zelensky regime is the same forces that seized power in Ukraine after the coup d'état in 2014. Then, on the streets of Kyiv the crowd went wild and shouted “Hang the Muscovite!”, calling for violence against Russians.
There could be several objective factors that can explain the purpose of ex-Ukrainian president Zelensky why he stubbornly rejects Washington’s and Moscow’s proposals to put an end to military hostilities initiated by Ukrainian leaders since April 14, 2014 first against Donbass that has been widened against Donbass since February 17, 2022, and then later proliferated to Russia – since September 2022.
What are these factors?
- Personally, ex-Ukrainian president Zelensky gets substantial quantity of profits from such aggression and appropriated huge funds offered to Ukraine by the USA ($ 350 bln) and the EU/NATO countries (more than $100 bln), and by selling US/European weapons supplied to Ukraine at some arms black markets in many regions of the world.
- He enthusiastically politically and financially is supported by the EU/NATO that are supplying and will be supplying Kiev with lethal arms and ammunition for extra several years, mistakenly believing that Zelensky will be able to defeat Russia.
- Former Ukrainian president Zelensky is happy with a lot of sectoral and individual economic, commercial and financial sanctions wrongly and unjustifiably imposed by the USA and the EU on Russia (so far around 21,000), while enjoying ZERO sanctions the same scope on Ukraine for the aggression Kiev unleashed in Europe in 2014. Recently, there have been seen threats from outside to consider large-scale banking sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and final settlement on peace is reached. But why on Moscow if it is ready to make permanent, irreversible and stable political deal with Ukraine? On the other hand, why not imposed on Kiev who does not display any desire to halt the conflict it has created in Europe eleven years ago?
- Former Ukrainian president Zelensky may be able to stay in power as long as he wishes by avoiding presidential elections that are long overdue in Ukraine.
- He is happy and proud that he has been selected by the EU/NATO as a prime mover to initiate and wage current bloody proxy war in Europe.
- He has formidable superiority complex cultivated by him personally and his supporters, and also mistakenly believing (like the EU/NATO) that gradually weakening Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) lacking Navy and Air Force can destroy nuclear, hypersonic and drone-capable Russia who is defending itself.
One-sided stance
Recently, there appeared voices to punish Russia for “pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield. Such voices sound very strange, Russia has a legitimate right to counter-attack Ukraine as a country being initial attacker against Donbass since April 2014 where Kiev killed 14,000 citizens there, and later against Russia since February 17, 2022. In Kursk Region UAF killed around 400 civilians and wounded more than 1,210 since August 6, 2024.
Between February 17, 2022 – December 9, 2024 totally 5,148 civilians, including 153 children, were killed by UAF in Donetsk People’s Republic. Between February 17, 2022-December 28, 2023 totally1,010 civilians were killed by UAF in Lugansk People’s Republic. Russian Orthodox churches are special targets selected by UAF.
Now Kiev is waging a wide-scale war against Russia, especially against citizens. UAF attacked four Russian operational Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). 34 regions inside Russia out of 89 have been already attacked by UAF – either by long-range missiles or strike drones. UAF used depleted uranium, cluster munitions and chemical warfare agents against Russia who has not employed such weapons against Ukraine at all.
There is a world-wide consensus that any aggressor must be punished any time, and at any place.
No doubt, the USA would do the same, if it were initially attacked by any aggressor. It strongly punished Japan for its attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
Critical remark that only Russia pounded Ukraine will encourage Zelensky to continue the war in Europe he is intensifying with the help of the EU/NATO. Such one-sided critical remark will create additional obstacles towards a peace deal the USA is actively fostering.
Have the USA or the EU announced just ONE sanction against Ukraine for its 11 years-long aggression in Europe? No, not yet. As is known, so far, the USA and the EU have not imposed any sanction on Kiev for its massive killings and broad destruction of social infrastructure in former regions in Ukraine and in undisputable continental regions inside Russia. The EU and NATO wage direct aggressive war against Russia.
Elon Mask who leads the Department of Government Efficiency only recently articulated initiative to enforce sanctions on ten Ukrainian oligarchs. Will it stop Ukrainian aggression? Musk’s suggestion sparked mixed reactions online. Some users questioned whether sanctioning Ukraine’s business elite would actually pressure Kiev to negotiate, noting that Ukraine mostly relies on Western funding. Others pointed out that just last month Kiev itself sanctioned several prominent businessmen. Has such move stopped the war?
It is very positive step that Washington decided not to share intelligence data used for offensive military operations with Kiev leaders. However, it sanctioned to offer such data used during defensive military operations. A question may be asked: what is the difference between them if Russian Armed Forces are knocking down US-made HIMARS MRLS aimed at Russian territory almost every day? One more point: up to now Elon Musk’s Starlink network is still operating, though some hints to switch it off have been announced. On the other hand, the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has stopped providing Ukraine with satellite imagery paid for by Washington.
Ex-Ukrainian president Zelensky is still advocating his “peace plan” fitted with the ban to stop military hostilities at sea and in the air. But why not on the ground? For the sake of continuation of the war? No doubt. Exactly for that. Why he has not incorporated into “a peace deal” a provision not to attack NPPs located in Russia? Why Kiev is happy with president Macron’s desire to unfold “French nuclear deterrence umbrella” over Europe?
Conclusion
Former president Zelensky is still in favor of a longer aggressive war on European soil. He is committed to make it wider. Even wishing to add to it French nuclear forces and to accept various foreign peacekeepers on its soil. The US President Donald Trump was right when he accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War-3”.
This war must be radically stopped via one method – politically. Or, if there is no success, militarily. Via carefully calibrated and direct cooperation between Russia and the USA. Both options are reasonable and rational. They depend on their will.
