A striking idea from the Chairman of the Dutch parliament, Martin Bosma: “Divide and rule at the table”.
The Dutch press writes that Bosma proposed this idea to split and divide Belgium during his meeting with the French ambassador in early February. The Chairman of the Dutch parliament tabled the idea during a joint dinner. He suggested that Flanders could go to the Netherlands and France would then get Wallonia.
Martin Bosma proposed during a dinner with the French ambassador to divide Belgium between the Netherlands and France. Petra de Koning reveals this in her weekly column in NRC.
Other members of parliament were also present at the conversation. “These MPs, and according to them also the ambassador, were astonished when they heard Bosma say what Geert Wilders also said once: that the Netherlands would like to have Flanders included. Then Wallonia, said Bosma according to the MPs, could go to France.
On Thursday, Bosma does not want to say anything about the dinner or about the idea of ‘Greater Netherlands’ that he is said to have expressed there. Only this: “On such an evening, politics are discussed and about things that could possibly happen, yes.”
The idea of merging the Netherlands and Flanders is particularly popular among right-wing radicals, such as the extreme right-wing organisation Voorpost. Geert Wilders has also repeatedly advocated taking over Flanders. In Belgium, only the extreme right-wing Vlaams Belang seems to be in favour of it.
In the past, the party advocated a “restored Dietsland”, more recently the party has only spoken out in favour of closer cooperation between Flanders and the Netherlands – probably because few Flemish people are waiting for a Dutch takeover.
While Bosma promised to be “totally neutral” as Speaker of the House, it has been shown time and again that he cannot give up his extreme right-wing convictions. For example, he has declared the use of the term “extreme right” taboo in the House, because according to him, the extreme right does not exist. With his bizarre proposal to the French ambassador, he once again proves the absurdity of that reasoning.
Martin Bosma is a radical-right politician from the party of Geert Wilders, who himself had also once suggested this idea during his visit to Vlaams Belang in Antwerp.
